MIAMI DADE BUS RAPID TRANSIT SOUTH CORRIDOR

MIAMI, FL

THE PROPOSED SOUTH CORRIDOR TRANSITWAY BUS RAPID TRANSIT (BRT) PROGRAM REVITALIZES THE CURRENT 20-MILE SOUTH DADE BUSWAY. FOLLOWING THE TRAJECTORY ONCE OCCUPIED BY THE FLORIDA EAST COST RAILWAY AND RUNNING ADJACENT TO US-1 SOUTH DIXIE HIGHWAY, THE TRANSITWAY THREADS TOGETHER THE COMMUNITIES OF THE VILLAGE OF PINECREST, VILLAGE OF PALMETTO BAY, TOWN OF CUTLER BAY, UNINCORPORATED MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, CITY OF HOMESTEAD AND FLORIDA CITY. THE UNIQUENESS OF THIS TRANSIT WAY IN PROVIDING MOBILITY OPTIONS FOR THESE COMMUNITIES IS IN ITS EXPANSIVE REACH OVER THE SOUTHERN SECTION OF MIAMI-DADE COUNTY AND IN ITS USE OF BUS OPERATIONS. YET THIS UNIQUENESS IS ALSO A CHALLENGE IN TRYING TO PROVIDE THE CORRIDOR AN AESTHETIC STRATEGY THAT TRANSIT USERS CAN READILY IDENTIFY OVER THE LENGTH OF TRANSIT WAY AND THAT CAN ACCOMMODATE NEW TRANSIT STATION ELEMENTS.

AS PART OF THIS INITIAL PRELIMINARY DEVELOPMENT FOR THIS OVERALL AESTHETIC STRATEGY AND HOW IT IS MANIFESTED IN THE NEW BRT/HRT STATION DESIGNS, PARK AND RIDE/GARAGE FACILITY AND EXISTING STATION REFURBISHMENTS, WE HAVE MET AND EXCEEDED THE REQUIREMENTS DESCRIBED IN THE DESIGN CRITERIA PACKAGE FOR SOUTH CORRIDOR RAPID TRANSIT PROJECT.
